ETIAS Application Process: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Applying for ETIAS will be a short online process via the official EU portal or mobile app. Here's how it will work once ETIAS launches in late 2026 — and what to do before, during and after your application.

Step 1 — Use only the official EU portal or app

Apply exclusively via the official EU ETIAS website (travel-europe.europa.eu) or the official ETIAS mobile app. Do not use intermediaries: they charge extra fees for a form you can complete yourself in minutes. If you do let someone apply on your behalf, follow the official rules — see our guide on applying on behalf of others.

Step 2 — Complete the online form

Have your passport and a payment card at hand. You'll fill in your personal details, travel document data, education and occupation, intended travel details, and answer background questions (criminal convictions, past travel to conflict zones, prior removal orders). See the full list on our requirements page.

Applications for minors must be submitted by a person exercising parental authority or legal guardianship.

Step 3 — Pay the €20 fee

The fee is €20, payable online. Applicants under 18 or over 70 are exempt, as are family members of EU citizens who qualify for family-member status. An unsuccessful application is not refunded.

Step 4 — Receive a decision

You first receive an e-mail confirming submission, with your unique ETIAS application number — keep it.

Most applications are decided within minutes. If not, you'll receive a decision within four days. That period can be extended to up to 14 days if you are asked for extra information or documents, and up to 30 days if you are invited to an interview.

When approved, check immediately that your name, passport number and other details are correct — errors mean you will not be allowed to cross the border. If refused, the e-mail states the reasons and explains how to appeal.

When should you apply?

Apply well in advance of your trip — before you buy tickets or book accommodation. You can apply without confirmed travel plans.

Do not book travel based solely on assumptions: wait for the official launch communication from the EU. A transitional and grace period will follow the launch.

Travelling after approval

  • Carry the same passport you used in the application — ETIAS is electronically linked to it.
  • ETIAS is checked by carriers before boarding flights, buses and ships.
  • Border guards make the final entry decision; ETIAS doesn't guarantee entry.
  • You don't need to print anything, but knowing your application number helps.
