Indicative list based on the official EU data — the definitive list of nationalities is confirmed by the EU at launch.

Who needs an ETIAS travel authorisation

If you hold a passport from one of the visa-exempt countries or territories listed above and plan a short stay in any of the 30 participating European countries, you need ETIAS.

Note that some nationalities are only visa-exempt with a specific travel document — for example, nationals of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine need a biometric passport; with any other passport type they need a Schengen visa instead. Holders of Hong Kong S.A.R., Macao S.A.R. and Taiwanese passports (with identity card number) can also apply.

Special cases that still need ETIAS

  • School pupils from visa-required countries residing in a visa-exempt country, travelling on a school trip with their class and teacher, may travel with ETIAS instead of a visa under strict conditions.
  • Recognised refugees and stateless persons who reside in and hold a travel document issued by a visa-exempt country (or Ireland) and who don't need a visa for their destination.
  • UK nationals (unless they are beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement with a residence document — see below).
  • Crew members: depending on the country, civilian air and sea crew on duty may need ETIAS — requirements differ per country.

Who does not need ETIAS

  • Citizens of the 30 European countries requiring ETIAS, and of Ireland — including dual nationals; they must travel on the passport of that European country.
  • Nationals of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and holders of Vatican/Holy See passports.
  • Holders of a valid Schengen visa (the visa already covers the screening), and nationals of visa-required countries in general.
  • Holders of a residence permit or residence card issued by one of the ETIAS countries (Cyprus-issued documents have special rules) — they don't need ETIAS while their document is valid.
  • UK nationals who are beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement and hold the uniform-format residence document.
  • Refugees and stateless persons residing in an ETIAS country with a travel document issued by that country.
  • Holders of diplomatic, service/official or special passports from visa-exempt countries.
  • Holders of a local border traffic permit (within the border area), travel documents of recognised international organisations, and certain NATO forces personnel on duty.
  • Beneficiaries of the EU Temporary Protection Directive.

Dual nationality

If one of your nationalities is from an ETIAS country or Ireland, you are exempt — but you must travel with the passport of that country. If your European passport has expired, contact that country's consulate for a new travel document; you cannot 'fall back' on your other nationality's passport plus ETIAS.

Long stays and other purposes

ETIAS only covers short stays (90 days in any 180-day period). If you plan to work, study or stay longer, you will need the appropriate national visa or permit instead.
