Avoid ETIAS Scams: Official Application Guide

ETIAS hasn't even launched, and unofficial 'application' websites already exist. As of now, no application is possible and no action is required. Here's how to stay safe.

Warning signs of a scam site

  • It claims you can apply for ETIAS today — you can't, the system isn't live.
  • It charges more than the official €20 fee, or hides a 'service fee' on top.
  • The domain is not an official EU domain (the official portal lives on travel-europe.europa.eu).
  • It pressures you with countdowns, 'last chance' banners or guaranteed approvals.
  • It asks for information the EU doesn't need, like bank statements or health data — the real application asks for no health information and no biometrics.

Abusive intermediaries

Commercial intermediaries are allowed to submit an application on your behalf — but the EU warns about abusive practices:

  • pretending to be the official application channel, making their extra fee look mandatory;
  • fraudulent use of your personal or financial data;
  • charging unreasonably high prices;
  • failing to submit your application correctly or on time.

If you use an intermediary at all, follow the official rules — see our page on applying on behalf of others.

Official vs. unofficial

When ETIAS launches, apply only via the official EU website or the official mobile app. The official application costs €20 (free for under-18s, over-70s and qualifying family members of EU citizens) and takes minutes.

Intermediaries typically charge several times that for the same form — and some never file anything at all.

How to report abuse

Once ETIAS is live, you will be able to report abusive intermediaries anonymously on the official ETIAS website. The reports help the EU monitor the system; for compensation you'd still pursue claims under national consumer or criminal law.

Also consider reporting scam websites to your national consumer-protection authority.
