ETIAS Application Requirements: Everything You Need

The ETIAS application is deliberately lightweight: a valid travel document, a payment card and a few minutes of your time. But there are important rules about which travel documents are accepted.

A valid travel document

You need a valid passport (or other travel document to which a visa may be affixed). It should not expire in less than three months and should not be older than ten years.

ETIAS is electronically linked to this exact document — if you renew your passport, you need a new ETIAS.

Tip: if your passport expires soon, consider renewing it before applying, since your ETIAS dies with your passport.

Not all travel documents are accepted

Specific requirements apply to documents issued by some countries and territories:

  • Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia: only biometric passports qualify for ETIAS — other passports require a visa.
  • Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine: only ICAO-standard biometric passports qualify.
  • Hong Kong: only the 'Hong Kong Special Administrative Region' passport.
  • Macao: only the 'Região Administrativa Especial de Macau' passport.
  • Taiwan: only passports that include an identity card number.

If your document doesn't meet the requirement, you'll need a Schengen visa instead.

Information requested in the form

  • Personal information: name(s), surname, date and place of birth, nationality, home address, parents' first names, e-mail address and phone number.
  • Travel document details.
  • Level of education and current occupation.
  • Details of your intended travel and stay.
  • Background questions: criminal convictions, past travel to war or conflict zones, and whether you were recently ordered to leave any country.

If you declare you are a family member of an EU citizen, you'll also provide their details and an explanation of your family ties. No biometrics and no health information are collected.

The application fee

You need a payment card for the €20 fee; various online payment options will be available.

Exempt from payment: applicants under 18, applicants over 70, and family members of EU citizens who qualify for family-member status.
